The US prepared for migrant caravans with ammo and riot gear — Quartz

As a caravan of Central American immigrants headed toward the southern US border last November, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) started stockpiling ammunition and riot gear for its officers. Government filings from the time show multiple expenditures related to the caravan. One, for $108,464, is labeled: “AMMUNITION FOR CARAVAN EFFORT.” Another, for $16,906, reads: “EMERGENCY PURCHASE OF RIOT GEAR IN RESPONSE TO CENTRAL AMERICA MIGRANT CARAVAN.” Donald Trump has portrayed the large groups of migrants seeking asylum in the US as a national emergency, warning Americans about “some very tough criminal elements” traveling within them. Those statements have been widely debunked. (The Washington Post, for example, called Trump’s tweets a “caravan of phony claims,” and gave them four Pinocchios, its rating for the biggest whoppers.) Many of the migrants are women and children fleeing violence and poverty at home. The bulk of them have stayed in Mexico, where they are waiting for a chance to make their asylum claims at a legal port of entry. In late November, the Border Patrol quickly dispersed a crowd of immigrants on the Mexican side of the border, in Tijuana, using tear gas. A...

Rugged frequency dividers – 23 October 2019 – RF Design

Pasternack has launched a new line of frequency divider modules that cover broadband frequencies from 0,1 GHz to 20 GHz. A broad selection of 28 different models is offered with a variety of fixed divide-by ratios from 2 to 40. These prescalers are ideal for use in phase locked loop (PLL) and frequency synthesiser circuit designs, as well as test instrumentation. Typical applications include use in aerospace and defence, satellite communications, VSAT, test and measurement equipment, and point-to-point radio networks. Designs are available in compact and rugged SMA connectorised packages. Circuit assemblies feature advanced GaAs HBT MMIC semiconductor technology that produces low additive SSB phase noise performance with typical levels down to -155 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset. Input power ranges from -20 to +15 dBm, with output power ranging from -6 to +5 dBm, depending on the model. All Pasternack frequency divider modules are designed for high reliability. Most models are guaranteed to meet MIL-STD-202 environmental test conditions for humidity, shock, vibration and altitude. Some models are hermetically sealed and guaranteed to meet MIL-STD-883 environmental test conditions for...

With the latest craze of electric vehicles, it might be tempting to take an old project

With the latest craze of electric vehicles, it might be tempting to take an old project car and convert it from gas to electric. On the surface, it sounds simple, but the reality is there are a number of pitfalls. It would be nice if you could find a drop in engine replacement that was ready to go. According to Swindon Powertrain, you’ll be able to soon. Based on their existing powertrain that can convert a Mini to EV, the transverse powertrain weighs 70 kg and if it can fit in a Mini, it can probably fit in nearly anything. Specifically, it’s 60 cm wide and 44 cm deep — that means it could fit easily in a roughly two foot box. The height can be as little as 28 cm. The company talks about fitting it on a quad bike or even a loading platform. It can be thought of as sort of an electric “crate engine” — a common term for a ready to install powerplant that, as the name implies, arrives in a crate. The powertrain with a single-speed transmission, cooling system, and inverter weighs in at 154 pounds and generates up to 110 horsepower.  We aren’t sure what the expected battery pack is, but presumably, it will be somewhat flexible. It’ll be interesting to see how people will integrate ...

Column: The odd traditions of the Nacirema: Air conditioning

The term Nacirema is American spelled backward. It was first introduced by Horace Miner in, “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema.” Today, it is mainly used by anthropologists to distance themselves, and avoid personal bias, when writing about American culture, its rituals, and its customs. I have lived in Nacirema country for a little more than three years now and I am yet to walk into a Nacireman building whose atmosphere is not being regulated by what the Naricema like to call “air-con.” And what a con it is. At some point in Nacireman history, someone convinced Naciremans that in order to be comfortable they must consistently control all aspects of nature, at all times, including the temperature.  From offices to shops, to libraries, classrooms, cars, buses, restaurants — you name it — everything is conditioned in public spaces. Indeed, there is a need for air-con during extreme weather such as the very hot summers and cold winters. However, I do not understand the need to make buildings below freezing in the summer — what ever happened to room temperature?  Even more, the Naciremans have air-con running throughout the autumn and spring. In these seasons, Naciremans a...

Before dismantling the old toilet, turn off the water at the mains by locating the stopcock

Before dismantling the old toilet, turn off the water at the mains by locating the stopcock and turning it clockwise. Use a cup, sponge or towel to remove as much water as possible from the toilet bowl and cistern. Have a bucket to hand to collect the water. Remove the screws from the base of the toilet and from inside the cistern if it is attached to the wall. Gently detach the old toilet from the waste pipe. You can push a cloth into the pipe to help stop smelly gases from spreading. Assemble and fit the flush mechanism and inner parts of the cistern. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and don’t over-tighten any fixings. Attach the close-couple washer to the top of the pan. Then, carefully lift the cistern into position, making sure that the flush mechanism thread fits into the washer and that the bolts sit comfortably through the holes in the pan. Align the waste pipe to the pan connector and attach, making sure the pan goes right into the connector collar. Use a spirit level to check that the cistern is level. If your cistern has fixing holes in the back, mark the position of the fixing holes onto the wall with a pencil. Use a pencil to mark the outline of the toilet pa...

One Piece Chapter 960 theory: Straw Hats may have known there was a Traitor

So the previous chapter gave us more bad news than good. Instead of confirming theories predicting that Law helped our heroes escape, we were shown what truly happened the night before the fire festival. However, I noticed something odd, that might confirm the safety of Straw hats & their allies. As we all know, Orochi attacked the possible locations of the alliance. His first target was the hiding place of Sunny in Kuri beach. Next were the bridges connecting Kibi and Udon, and Ringo and Hakumai. This frustrated Ocho’s group from transporting the katanas. Next, the Itachi port was destroyed. Some ships, that resemble the ones that Franky fixed were also destroyed. Lastly, the bridge from Kuri to Udon and another bridge connecting Hakumai and Udon were both destroyed. The first thing I find odd is that among all the places Orochi attacked, Ringo was the only place where we can see some members of the alliance. Moonflower O-Cho is a yakuza boss tasked by Hyougoro to transport the katanas from Ringo to Udon. On the other hand, the rest of the areas attacked by Orochi do not have any evidence of human or Mink existence. The Sunny was attacked far too many times already, but ev...

Rock Pi X Intel Cherry Trail Board to Sell for as low as $39

News, Tutorials, Reviews, and How-Tos related to Embedded Linux and Android, Arduino, ESP8266, Development Boards, TV Boxes, Mini PCs, etc.. Most low cost (sub $100) single board computers are based on Arm processors because Intel processors are normally more expensive, but there are some exceptions with AAEON Up Board and Atomic Pi both powered by an Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor and selling for $99 and $35 respectively. The former follows Raspberry Pi form factor and is easy to use, but the latter requires some more work to wire power supply unless you buy an extra baseboard. There should however soon be a third option for low-cost Intel SBCs with Radxa Rock Pi X board powered by an Intel Atom x5-Z8300 Cherry Trail processor and is expected to sell for as little as $39. Rock Pi X just showed up in Hackerboards database, and there will be two models, namely Rock Pi X model A and Rock Pi X model B with the following specifications: The photos above differ from the ones in Hackerboards website, as CNX Software requested updated photos directly from Radxa. Apart from the Intel processor and the lack of an M.2 slot, the specifications are very similar to the company’s Arm-based Roc...
