The star turn of most hackspaces and other community workshops is usually a laser cutter. An expensive and fiddly device that it makes much more sense to own collectively than to buy yourself. This isn’t to say that laser cutters are outside the budget of the experimenter though, we’re all familiar with the inexpensive table-top machines from China. Blue and white boxes that can be yours for a few hundred dollars, and hold the promise of a real laser cutter on your table. Owning one of these machines is not always smooth sailing though, because their construction and choice of components are often highly variable. A thorough check and often a session of fixing the non-functional parts is a must before first power-on. [Extreme Electronics] bought one, and in a series of posts documented the process from unboxing to cutting. Starting with a full description of the machine and what to watch for out of the box, then a look at the software. A plugin for Corel Draw was supplied, along with a dubious copy of Corel Draw itself. Finally we see the machine in operation, and the process of finding the proper height for beam focus by cutting an inclined plane of acrylic. The series rounds o...

Fear and Trembling: LG Display faces the axe for OLED burn-in and market squeeze

After seven years of ignoring the warning signs, LG Display’s OLED TV panel business is facing a reckoning by LG Group’s leadership and the market as rival Samsung jumps to MicroLED and QD-OLED panels. LG Display has made some big promises for this year. It plans to move 4 million OLED TV panels in 2019, after shipping 2.9 million panels last year. But behind the big boasting, there is now fear. The company is the world’s largest Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) maker, which is still its mainstay, but LCD prices have dropped to a point where it is hitting the firm hard.  Then there are the disastrous profits; its annual operating profit in 2018 fell 96.2% from the previous year. It went into the red for the first quarter of this year. And while its OLED TV business made a profit for the first time this year, it was only a meagre one. Sales of the OLED TV have also opened slower than expected, and the general feeling within the company is that it has pushed itself into a corner. Meanwhile, archrival Samsung Electronics has taken advantage of the LCD price drop. Its quantum dot (QD) layered LCD TVs, dubbed QLED by the firm, have performed better than market expectati...

Grand Hotel Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Welcome to the Riviera Grand Hotel

Just when I thought that I had things figured out on Grand Hotel Season 1 Episode 1 another secret, another lie, would be revealed turning everything on it’s head.  The Mendoza family is dysfunctional, to say the very least. Blended families are never easy, but when your kids are sabotaging eachother’s weddings to get back at you, I think it may be time for family counseling.  It’s easy to see how the writers want to paint the Mendoza children: Alicia and Javi good. The evil stepsisters, Yoli and Carolina, bad. Nothing is black and white on Grand Hotel though, and everything is colored in shades of grey.  Santiago may have pulled the rug out from under Alicia and Javi when Santiago revealed he was selling the hotel to Carolina’s fiance, Byron’s, family, but Carolina can’t be faulted for that.  Matteo: So uh, first, thanks to Carolina for marrying me. You’re hilarious, unbelievably beautiful, I mean my friends can’t believe how hot you are. I also want to thank Gigi and Santiago. It’s not always easy mixing family and business but uh you have made this deal a total breeze. Carolina: Deal? Santiago: Thank you, Byron.Byron: Wong...

Are We Fighting a War on Homelessness? Or a War on the Homeless?

Last fall, a special investigator for the United Nations presented a report to the General Assembly on the global housing crisis, pointing out that a quarter of the world’s urban population now live in “informal settlements” or encampments, increasingly in the most affluent countries. The fact-finding mission took the investigator to cities like Mumbai, Belgrade and Mexico City, where she found rodent infestations, children playing on garbage heaps “as if they were trampolines” and people living in shacks or in damp abandoned buildings full of exposed wires. At the invitation of academics and advocates, she also went to San Francisco, where the median home price is $1.6 million. There she witnessed equally deplorable conditions. Crucial to the report’s assessment was the finding that the city’s resistance to providing help and basic necessities in the encampments there qualified as “cruel and inhuman treatment,” which was in line with violations of international standards of human rights. While the moment might have been politically galvanizing on a national level, it passed by with comparative silence. Months later, in fact, the compassion deficit surrounding the issue of homel...

Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on

Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on the box. But during a recent trip to the hardware store the longest advertised lifetime I found was 25,000 hours. Others claimed only 7,500 or 15,000 hours. And yes, these are brand-name bulbs from Cree and GE. So, what happened to those 100,000 hour residential LED bulbs? Were the initial estimates just over-optimistic? Was it all marketing hype? Or, did we not know enough about LED aging to predict the true useful life of a bulb? I put these questions to the test. Join me after the break for some background on the light bulb cartel from the days of incandescent bulbs (not a joke, a cartel controlled the life of your bulbs), and for the destruction of some modern LED bulbs to see why the lifetimes are clocking in a lot lower than the original wave of LED replacements. Any discussion of light bulb lifetime would be incomplete without mention of the Phoebus cartel, an international organization formed in 1924 by the world’s leading light bulb manufacturers to manipulate the bulb market. As discussed by Markus Krajewski in “The Great Lightbulb Conspiracy”, the cartel assigned ...

3D Printing Industry first took a look at Canadian 3D printing company, AON3D in 2015. At the time they were raising funds for a successful Kickstarter. With a few years under their belts plus the validation of commercial success the company is now back on our radar. With their AON-M 3D printer, the company is specifically targeting users who want to create quality industrial prints but without the need to use a specialized bureau or own an expensive industrial machine. With the ability to print advanced materials such as PEEK. AON-M bridges the gap between desktop FDM machines and industrial models such as the Stratasys’ Fortus. The use of materials such as PEEK and ULTEM, is something we expect to be a big trend for this year. Particularly with more affordable machines being capable to print advanced materials such as the AON-M. We asked some users of the AON-M 3D printer about how they see the possibilities. Matt Howlett of 3D printing filament suppliers 3DXTech said, The future of 3D printing lies with advanced materials and the possibilities they enable. AON3D lets me print with engineering grade thermoplastics such as carbon-fiber reinforced PEEK at an order of magnitude l...

Hair clipper teardown: comparing changes in design after 50 years / Boing Boing

Steve Hoefer broke his 50-year-old electric hair trimmer, so he bought the latest model. He opened it to get a peek inside, and wrote about the similarities and differences. The screws holding the faceplate have decreased from three to two, and they go through the other side, but they’re the same self-tapping screws in both. Same Phillips head, same diameter and length, same thread pitch. The way it works is by utilizing the 60Hz oscillation of AC power to run an electromagnet. AC power inverts the polarity of the electricity 60 times a second. When you use this to run an electromagnet, it effectively turns it on and off every time the power alternates. In the clipper, the electromagnet is the big orange thing near the front, wound with all of the copper wire and a C-shaped ferrous core that’s fastened securely to the case. The motion is created by the vaguely question-mark-shaped piece of metal on the right side. It’s only attached at the base of the unit near the cord with two beefy screws. (The cover in the 2016 version blocks access to the screws from the outside, which seems fair. Unscrewing them without opening the case would be bad. But they also made them pentalobe screw...
