Hair clipper teardown: comparing changes in design after 50 years / Boing Boing

Steve Hoefer broke his 50-year-old electric hair trimmer, so he bought the latest model. He opened it to get a peek inside, and wrote about the similarities and differences. The screws holding the faceplate have decreased from three to two, and they go through the other side, but they’re the same self-tapping screws in both. Same Phillips head, same diameter and length, same thread pitch. The way it works is by utilizing the 60Hz oscillation of AC power to run an electromagnet. AC power inverts the polarity of the electricity 60 times a second. When you use this to run an electromagnet, it effectively turns it on and off every time the power alternates. In the clipper, the electromagnet is the big orange thing near the front, wound with all of the copper wire and a C-shaped ferrous core that’s fastened securely to the case. The motion is created by the vaguely question-mark-shaped piece of metal on the right side. It’s only attached at the base of the unit near the cord with two beefy screws. (The cover in the 2016 version blocks access to the screws from the outside, which seems fair. Unscrewing them without opening the case would be bad. But they also made them pentalobe screw...

Was hat es mit AC-Strom auf sich? Was ist Wechselstrom und was ist Gleichstrom? Und was

If you’ve ever constructed a Tesla coil or watched a demo, there’s something fascinating about the steady stream of purple sparks that spray out from its discharge terminal, the noise of the spark, the smell of the ozone. You’ll also likely realize you’re witnessing the step-up of a hundred volts or so into tens of thousands, and that the output of most coils (tabletop variety) is rather harmless, due to the limited current and high output frequency that channels most of the energy over the outer surfaces of living organisms — the so-called skin effect. The Tesla coil is also a radio transmitter, embodying elements found in any such device — a source of oscillations and resonant circuitry — and a good case can be made for Tesla’s having “gotten there” before Marconi. However, according to Nikola Tesla, his invention was not intended as a device for wireless communication, but rather as a means of generating very high frequency alternating current that might be used for wirelessly powering homes and industry. When the circuits of early radio transmitters (spark oscillators) and the Tesla coil are compared, there’s little difference, except for a coupling network for delivering th...

Campagnolo Super Record EPS 12-speed: Details and first-ride review

It was hardly a secret that Campagnolo would upgrade its Super Record EPS electronic groupset to 12-speed; the company even told us that outright a few months ago, and sponsored riders have already been using it since the start of the season. But now it’s finally here, and we have all the details. Just like with previous EPS groupsets, many of the components are carried over from the mechanical version. But Campagnolo has overhauled nearly every EPS-specific part to create what feels like a pretty major step forward. Updates to the new Ergopower levers are subtle, including a new texture on the Vari-Cushion rubber hoods and a new unidirectional finish on the carbon fibre brake lever blades. The double curve of the brake levers is carried over as well, and falls nicely into the hand with long blades that are easy to grasp with one or two fingers. It’s a fine design and something that I feel is a strong point within the groupset. Inside – as you’d expect – the electronic and braking bits are the same as before. Campagnolo once again uses the dropped thumb lever from the previous generation of Ergopower for easier access from the drops, but now the paddle behind the brake lever is ...

What’s the most useful thing you didn’t realize you needed? A stylish place to put all

What’s the most useful thing you didn’t realize you needed? A stylish place to put all those odds and ends. When you arrive home with your hands full, having a dedicated place to drop your keys, mail and phone can be a big help. But if they’re just dumped on top of a console or a bench, they can look messy. That’s where a catchall — a small tray, bowl or basket — comes in handy. “It not only adds an extra layer to a room as a decorative accessory, but also helps keep the space organized,” said Paloma Contreras, an interior designer in Houston. And not only in the entry hall, Ms. Contreras noted. A catchall is also useful in the bedroom, where “they’re great on night stands,” she said, for holding jewelry or reading glasses. Or in a home office, where they can hold paper clips, pens and other small supplies. When you’re shopping for a catchall, Ms. Contreras said, look for appealing shapes, materials and patterns. And don’t forget to expand your search beyond items marketed as catchalls. Distinctive bowls, for example, work just as well. How big should it be? That depends on your requirements, but “typically under 12 inches long,” Ms. Contreras said. “Between five and eight inch...

The 4 Best Phones for Making Actual Phone Calls in 2019 « Smartphones :: Gadget Hacks

While our smartphones are many things, one of their primary functions is to make calls. Many of us try to avoid ever having to make calls, but there are situations when it’s a must, such as wishing your grandma happy Birthday or calling 911 — and in those times you want stellar call quality. For the most part, the call quality of phones is dependent upon your carrier. As with any audio, there are codecs or audio formats used to deliver sound from your phone to whomever you calling and vice versa, with each having varying impact on the call quality. For GSM users such as AT&T and T-Mobile, this means using adaptive multi-rate codecs. For Verizon and Sprint subscribers, you are using enhanced variable rate codecs. Your phone’s involvement in this process starts at its support for these codecs. Features such as enhanced voice services and HD Voice give more bandwidth to calls, improving call quality. These must be supported by both the carrier and the phone to work. However, the phone call experience is more than just call quality. With the rise of robocalls and spam calling, having a phone which can prevent you from picking these up goes a long way. Additionally, b...
